Fixing Things

I grew up in an era of being able to fix things. It was especially frustrating to find that something could not be fixed. One early example was a failed vacuum tube. For some reason, repair technicians couldn’t face the moment where the tube was thrown in the garbage. Was that because the glass tube held something magical or was that an early understanding that we were on the verge of polluting our planet?
